On a recent trip to Japan, I had to admit it: overweight folk were virtually extinct. Had I entered a parallel universe where calories had been genetically extracted from food, or cosmetic surgery was a birthright, undetectable to the human eye? No, no, it’s far simpler than that, says Naomi Moriyama author of Japanese Women Don’t Get Old or Fat. Read on.

With an obesity rate of a mere three per cent among women (compared to France’s 11 per cent), there’s no doubt about it – the Japanese are onto something. According to Moriyama, it all comes down to the following habits:

Secret #1: Base your diet on fish, soya, rice, vegetables and fruit. It goes without saying: not much fat to be found here.

Secret #2: Eat much smaller portions, served in small bowls. The smaller your bowl, the less you will eat.

Secret #3: Cook with light oils such as canola, using gentle methods. Whether steaming, sautéing or simmering, preparing food without heavy oils like olive and an oven can produce less-fattening results.

Secret #4: Choose rice to eat with every meal rather than bread. Avoiding bread-products also includes those tempting, but naughty muffins, apple danishes and white rolls.

Secret #5: Make breakfast your biggest, most protein-packed meal. You’ll feel fantastic all the way through until lunch time with sustained energy, rather than nursing that sinking, sleepy feeling.

Secret #6: Eat smaller dessert portions. Don’t put iron bars between you and chocolate or other sweet treats. Indulge every now and then, just make sure it’s in petit portions.

They help your body ditch a chemical called homocysteine that contributes to hardening of the arteries. Prevent age-related cataracts and macular degeneration with antioxidant-rich foods.


Want to ease menopausal symptoms? Phytoestrogens, or plant-based estrogens, may help ease those hot flashes. They also may lower your risk of breast cancer. What Are The Treatment Options For Liver Cancer?

The treatment options are dictated by the stage of liver cancer and the overall condition of the patient. The only proven cure for liver cancer is liver transplantation for a solitary, small (<3cm) tumor. Now, many physicians may dispute this statement.

They may argue that a small tumor can be surgically removed (partial hepatic resection) without the need for a liver transplantation. Moreover, they may claim that the one and three year survival rates for resection are perhaps comparable to those for liver transplantation.

However, most patients with liver cancer also have cirrhosis of the liver and would not tolerate liver resection surgery. But, they probably could tolerate the transplantation operation, which involves removal of the patient's entire diseased liver just prior to transplanting a donor liver.

Furthermore, many patients who undergo hepatic resections will develop a recurrence of liver cancer elsewhere in the liver within several years. In fact, some experts believe that once a liver develops liver cancer, there is a tendency for that liver to develop other tumors at the same time (synchronous multicentric occurrence) or at a later time (metachronous multicentric occurrence).

The results of the various medical treatments (chemotherapy, chemoembolization, ablation, and proton beam therapy) remain disappointing. Moreover, for reasons noted earlier (primarily the variability in natural history), there have been no systematic study comparisons of the different treatments.

As a result, individual patients will find that the various treatment options available to them depend largely on the local expertise.

How do we know if a particular treatment worked for a particular patient? Well, hopefully, the patient will feel better. However, a clinical response to treatment is usually defined more objectively.

Thus, a response is defined as a decrease in the size of the tumor on imaging studies along with a reduction of the alpha-fetoprotein in the blood, if the level was elevated prior to treatment.

What Is Liver Cancer?

Alcoholism and Cirrhosis to Liver Cancer


Cancer can start within the liver (primary liver cancer or hepatocellular cancer) or spread to the liver (metastatic liver cancer) from other sites, such as the colon.


Cancer that starts in the liver, which I will refer to simply as liver cancer, is the fifth most common cancer in the world. In the U.S., it is among the 10 most common cancers.


This cancer is more frequent among Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanics than among Caucasians.


Liver cancer is a bad cancer. It has frequently spread beyond the liver by the time it is discovered, and only 5% of patients with liver cancer that has begun to cause symptoms survive even five years without treatment.


The only hope for patients who are at risk for liver cancer is regular surveillance so that the cancers can be found early. Early cancers can be treated by surgical removal (resection), destruction of the individual tumors, or liver transplantation.


Although the current techniques for surveillance are not very good at detecting early liver cancer, newer techniques are being tested and appear to be better.


The most common diseases associated with liver cancer are chronic viral hepatitis, alcoholism, and cirrhosis (scarring of the liver). Moreover, chronic viral hepatitis is common in alcoholism, and both viral hepatitis and alcoholism cause cirrhosis which usually precedes the development of cancer.


Therefore, the contributions and interrelationships of alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis, and cirrhosis in the development of liver cancer are complex. Despite the complexity, it is important to try to understand the contributions of each disease so that patients at highest risk for liver cancer can be targeted for surveillance.


Theoretically, they also might be targeted with treatments that prevent the development of liver cancer, when such treatments are developed.

Heartburn is as American as apple pie—more than 60 million people experience it at least once a month. For some people—those with gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD—heartburn can be a constant companion.

Some heartburn triggers are obvious: chili dogs, chocolate cake, Thanksgiving. But heartburn doesn’t stop and start with food alone. If you have constant heartburn, it's time to track down the real culprit.

Smoking

As if anyone needed another reason to quit: Smoking makes GERD worse.

Smoking can weaken the valve between the stomach and esophagus (so stomach acid flows back into the esophagus); cause fat-digesting bile salts to migrate from the small intestine to the stomach; and cut down on saliva, which normally flushes stomach acid out of the esophagus and contains a natural acid-fighter, bicarbonate.

Pills

Prone to frequent headaches and heartburn? Think twice about reaching for the ibuprofen. When used regularly, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen can trigger heartburn

Some prescription drugs can too, including antibiotics, calcium channel blockers (for high blood pressure), bronchodilators such as albuterol (for asthma and COPD), osteoporosis drugs, and some sedatives.

Consult your doctor if you think your Rx is causing heartburn—don't just decide to stop taking a drug on your own.

Fish oil supplements

Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids and has been hailed as a natural way to manage heart disease, depression, and countless other health conditions. However, it can also cause heartburn.

The oil—not the fish—appears to be responsible for gastrointestinal side effects. Fish itself is low in fat and high in protein and is an excellent food for heartburn sufferers when used in a healthy, heartburn-soothing recipe.

Stress

Stress does seem to trigger heartburn, but the relationship is trickier than you might think. Stress does not cause an off-the-charts surge in stomach acid production.

However, a study in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research suggests that a heartburn patients perception of his symptoms—and not the actual levels of stomach acid—are associated with stress.

In other words, stressed people may be more aware of heartburn symptoms or the neurological effects of stress might ratchet up pain receptors in the esophagus.

Peppermint

Peppermint, like fish oil, is a double-edged sword when it comes to the stomach. Peppermint tea, peppermint-oil capsules, and even peppermint candies are often used to settle upset stomachs—but these remedies can backfire on people with GERD.

The soothing and numbing effect of menthol tends to relax the valve that separates the stomach and esophagus (known as the lower esophageal sphincter), which can cause stomach acids to drift up the esophagus more easily, aggravating heartburn.

Being overweight

The more you weigh, the more likely you are to have heartburn. A 2003 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the risk of acid reflux symptoms increases along with body-mass index (BMI).

The association seems to be stronger in women than men (especially premenopausal women).

Explanations vary. Poor diet, excess body fat in the abdomen, and chemicals released by body fat have all been cited as possible culprits.

In recent years, twin studies have suggested that 30% to 45% of your risk for GERD is dependent on genetic factors. (The rest is up to you: what you eat, whether you smoke, whether you exercise.)

Experts aren’t entirely sure what explains the hereditary nature of GERD. It could be due to inherited physical traits, such as abnormalities in stomach function or a hypersensitivity to stomach acids.

Freckles, Brown Spots and Hyperpigmentation

Changes in skin color, called melasma, is the result of increased melanin production or hyperpigmentation on localized patches of the skin, especially on the face. Find out what causes skin discoloration and how you can battle those brown spots.

2 Main Causes of Brown Spots

• Sun Damage. Unprotected sun exposure can cause areas of skin discoloration. These discolored patches have many names: from solar lentigenes, freckles, sun spots, age spots to liver spots, but they basically mean the same thing.

Sun spots appear as small brown patches of freckles on fairer skins. For darker skins, they emerge as small patches of ashen-grey discoloration.

• Hormones. Patches of skin discoloration can also be caused by birth control pills, pregnancy or estrogen replacement therapy. These are known as hormone masking or pregnancy masking.

What Are Those Brown Spots?

Freckles are small brown spots scattered mainly across the cheeks and are common in fair-skinned Asians who sunburn easily.

Liver Spots are caused by over-exposure to the sun and are larger and darker than freckles, often with irregular edges.

Melasma are light to dark brown blotches of pigmentation that commonly develop slowly over the forehead and cheeks. Melasma may be caused by hormone changes.

Fading Brown Spots

• Lightening Products. Hyperpigmentation, especially freckles and brown spots can be effectively treated with over-the-counter skin-lightening and/or exfoliating products such as 1-2% hydroquinone, AHAs, BHAs and kojic acid. This works best for superficial discoloration that occurs in the epidermis.

• Exfoliate. For superficial skin discoloration, exfoliating with AHAs and BHAs also help remove the built-up layers of melanin by increasing the turnover of cells.

• Resurfacing Procedures. For discolored pigment that lies deep in the dermis, topical agents usually do not work well. Laser resurfacing procedures and chemical peels can improve the condition, but results vary from person to person. There is also a risk of worsening of the discoloration for darker individuals.

Don't Forget Sunblock!

While you're treating brown spots, don't forget your sunblock. Your lightening creams may be fading your existing brown spots, but remember to use sunblock to prevent new ones from emerging.

• 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
• 1½ cups ½-inch-cubed potato
• 1 onion, halved and cut into thin strips
• 8 eggs
• ¼ cup heavy cream
• ¼ teaspoon salt
• ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper
• ¼ cup grated cheddar cheese
• ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
• 6 slices ham, cut into small pieces
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives

Directions:
1. Preheat broiler.

2. In a large nonstick skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add potato
and onion and sauté until potato is almost tender, about 10 to 12 minutes.

3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, cream, salt, and pepper.
Stir in the cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese, and ham. Pour into
skillet, reduce heat to medium and cook, without stirring, until
set around the edge but still runny in the center, about 5 minutes.

4. Place skillet under broiler, and broil until golden brown and just set,
about 2 minutes. Sprinkle with chives. Loosen edge with a rubber spatula,
slide onto a serving plate, and cut into wedges.

Stay Healthy During The Flu Season

The common flu may be highly contagious, but it doesn't have to hit us hard. Learn more about the steps you can take to lower your chances of catching the bug and stay healthy during the flu season.


The common flu

The flu is a viral infection caused by the influenza virus, which infects the respiratory tract (nose, throat and lungs). The virus is transmitted from person to person in secretions of the nose and lungs, for example when coughing or sneezing.

What are the flu symptoms?

Common symptoms include fever (usually high), headache, tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and body aches. In children, the flu can also have gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.


How can I prevent getting the flu?

You can minimize your chances of being exposed to respiratory droplets by taking these precautions:

Wash your hands frequently or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers (with a minimum concentration of 60 to 95 percent ethanol or isopropanol) to prevent the spread of germs.


Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, as these are direct entry points for viruses, which can get on your hands when you touched infected objects.


Avoid close contact (6 feet) with a sick person.


Get vaccinated

You can get protected from the flu by receiving the flu shot or vaccination, which is effective within two weeks of the injection. Flu vaccine is an inactivated vaccine, meaning that it contains killed influenza virus.


Vaccination stimulates the immune system to produce an immune response (antibodies) to the influenza virus. It is, however, not a fool-proof protection, as the virus strains vary from flu season to flu season each year, and the vaccine is only effective against strains that match the vaccine. This is why a revaccination is recommended every year.

    Place of entertainment for who like to have drink and show such as Pink Hotel club,Florida cafe and Paragon Disco club. For foods you can try Tha-Lay seafood, Tai See Hee Moo Kratha and along the Prachatipat road the small hawker stall. Tomyam is a must try dish .

    For relaxation here is very cheap you can try the spa at Preuksa Spa and Garabuning Spa. For ancient massage you can try Lee Garden Hotel at 7 floor, Golden Crown Hotel and Beauty girl and guy saloon.

    A trip to Hat yai

    Today 4th of June, i just reach Hat yai for a very short holiday and visit my friend here. This morning we reach about 8.am in the morning and check in to New Season Hotel it located at the center of the town, the hotel only cost you Thai Bhat 900.00 per day.

    This hotel rated as four star and is very new. All the staff here are very friendly and always smiling really make you day.

    I am now preparing to discover the interesting place and foods. Will continue to share hope i can discover some happening place, foods and entertainment.
